Title: New Frontiers in Tissue Characterization through Multimodal Ultrasound

We were honored to host Dr. Sergio J. Sanabria, Director of Science, Research and Development at Oncoustics Inc., for an inspiring seminar.
Abstract:

Ultrasound imaging is rapidly evolving into a quantitative modality for tissue characterization—poised to shift diagnostics from specialized imaging suites to scalable, point-of-care platforms. By harnessing the rich information embedded in raw ultrasound signals, objective biomarkers of tissue composition can be extracted to support early diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring of high-burden diseases.

In this talk, Dr. Sanabria will present his team’s work on multimodal ultrasound technologies that combine wave physics, quantitative imaging, and artificial intelligence. Applications include early detection of fatty liver disease, cancer monitoring, and assessment of muscle quality in sarcopenia—critical for metabolic disease, oncology, and aging care. This research is carried out within a strong translational ecosystem involving hospitals, manufacturers, start-ups, and large clinical datasets, with the goal of deploying AI-powered solutions at the point of care.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Sergio J. Sanabria received his Ph.D. from ETH Zurich in 2012, focusing on ultrasound-based non-destructive testing of biological materials. He later translated this expertise into medical imaging, pioneering a speed-of-sound diagnostic technology for breast cancer. From 2018 to 2020, he led clinical studies on ultrasound quantification of muscle adiposity at the University Hospital of Zurich. Since 2021, he has served as a tenure-track fellow at the University of Deusto and a research scientist at Stanford Radiology. In 2022, he joined Oncoustics Inc. as Director of R&D, leading the development of AI-powered ultrasound technologies for liver care, from algorithm design to FDA approval.

Thank you, Sergio, for an engaging and thought-provoking session! 👏
