Marina Pérez, Jacobo Ayensa and Manuel Doblaré published a new research paper
Computer in Biology and Medicine. September 2023
The work, entitled “Modelling cell adaptation using internal variables: Accounting for cell plasticity in continuum mathematical biology.” has been accepted in the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine.
In this paper, they present a novel approach to modelling cellular adaptation with a continuum model using internal variables to model cell phenotype.
Cellular adaptation is key in many processes related to cancer evolution, such as metastasis or drug resistance, and hence it is important to unravel the mechanisms that trigger it. Mathematical models are really useful tools in this line, helping to test hypotheses and what if situations.
The presented model is general and can be particularized to different problems, but we have focused on the evolution and adaptation of glioblastoma under hypoxia, and the first in silico results prove that it is able to qualitatively reproduce the trends observed in literature.
With further calibration and experimental validation, the model could be useful to predict glioblastoma evolution in different conditions.
As always, at TME Lab we are committed to multidisciplinarity as the best approach to cancer research!
Great work and congratulations to all the authors!
