Honorable Mention for a TMELAb Project as the Most Innovative Alternative Experimentation in 2023 within the Animal Rights Awards

The goal of NEXSKIN is to develop a new generation of skin models for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, reducing reliance on animal testing.

The project “Next-generation Skin-on-Chip integrating microbiota, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells (NEXSKIN),” led by Jesús Ciriza from the TMELab group, has been recognized with an honorable mention for the most innovative alternative experimentation project in 2023 within the Animal Rights Awards granted by the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030.

The project, deserving of this honorable mention for its uniqueness and innovative character, aims to “develop a new generation of skin models for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications, reducing reliance on animal testing and complying with European regulations prohibiting the use of animals in cosmetic trials.” The project seeks to improve in vitro skin models by incorporating microbiome, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells within the cutaneous epidermis, cultured on a human dermal extracellular matrix, within a microfluidic system simulating dermal vasculature.

The initiation of this project has been made possible through funding granted by the Government of Aragon (LMP233_21), utilizing the microfluidic models developed by the Aragonese company BEOnChip, as well as participation in the COST actions Netskinmodels (CA21108) and Improve (CA21139).

Jesus Ciriza talks about the #NEXSKIN project, an innovative laboratory-grown skin model that is changing paradigms and paving the way towards a future free from animal experimentation, in a interview made by Instituto de Investigación en Ingeniería de Aragón.
