Short Biography

Estibaliz Fernández is a predoctoral researcher at the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research (I3A) and at the Department of Histology and Human Anatomy of the University of Zaragoza, Spain. She graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Navarra and subsequently completed the MSc in Biomedical Engineering and the MSc in One Health from the University of Zaragoza. She joined the TME lab group, where she conducted her master’s thesis focused on the development of advanced skin models and currently has the opportunity to continue her research at the PhD level.

Her line of work is focused on developing a full-thickness skin model within a microfluidic system that accurately represents the epidermis, dermis, and vascular system. Additionally, her research aims to replace widely used commercial material scaffolds with a new biomaterial formed from human extracellular matrix to represent the dermis, as well as the integration of the skin microbiota into the skin model. Finally, the skin-on-chip model developed will be validated in terms of permeability and against known reference substances.

The aim of her research is to contribute to the understanding of the skin microenvironment and to accurately represent the human skin.
